2011 Goals

Seghe Hospital The Seghe Hospital

Our goal for 2011 is to raise $40,000 to construct an operating room at the Seghe Hospital during our November 2011 trip.  With your involvement, we will succeed in this endeavor.

As we continue to upgrade the facility and services of the Seghe Hospital, it has come to our attention that we must be able to provide surgical care to those in the Marovo Lagoon that need it.

For subsistence farmers and fishermen it is a true financial and personal hardship to leave their families and gardens unattended in order to travel to a city where surgical options are available.  Many times upon arriving at a larger hospital patients find that they have spent their life savings to be told that they will have to come back secondary to long waits or broken equipment in an overstressed healthcare system.  We have surgeons who want to make the trip to the Solomon Islands and perform surgeries, but we do not currently have a facility to accommodate them.

Outpatient Clinic Touring the Outpatient Clinic

As we travel to the Seghe area two times a year, we have the ability to perform surgeries for roughly four weeks out of the year.  For non-emergent situations, such as catarcts, we will be able to perform a good number of procedures during our trips.

The Seghe hospital board and the community are very excited about the prospect of an operating room.  The OR will be powered by the solar power system we have installed (see history).  Plans have been drawn-up for the operating room and the site has been chosen.  We will have a construction crew in place for our November trip to commence building the hospital.  Please help us to raise the $40,000 needed for materials.  No donation is too small.  All labor has been donated for the construction.
